There are three factors that make this a great article: Kevin’s intelligence, honesty and initial perspective of hating those who didn’t wear masks.

As an original anti-masker, I would get a little too much credit from his ‘Rubicon’ hypothesis. My objection was simply that this was something I had never done before in my life, and so out of small ‘c’ conservatism did not see why I should start unless there was a reason. I also had a sense that by doing so I was being dehumanized.

It only took a small amount of research to realize that there in fact was no reason to wear a mask and so those demanding I do had some other reason than health. This is the best explanation of that reason that I’ve seen.

Masks were effective after all. Yes Charles, it was to dehumanize us and mentally make us subservient. That was the purpose for masks. In the past, they would muzzle slaves for that reason.

As children, we are taught to follow and not question authority. As an elementary teacher, I did not teach in that manner but literally told them to ask questions when things don't make sense with patience. Children are so easily misled especially at the hands of a terrible teacher. One teacher can destroy a child's self worth and more. School takes that good sense away from developing minds and education was designed that way.

The Biomedical Collapse: How Modern Medicine Became a System of Dependence and Darkness

Modern medicine has entered absurdity. What began as a noble effort to alleviate suffering has metastasized into a machinery of control, dependence, disguised helplessness, endless sickness, “unsuspected” death and alienation—a system that treats life as a malfunctioning mechanism rather than a living, self-regulating organism. The biomedical model, once a symbol of progress, now stands as a monument to reductionism, dualism, and the death of meaning in science, a tremendous threat to humanity. A foundation of war against humanity, an open door for repression and psychopathic structures.

We’ve mistaken control for care.

We’ve mistaken data for truth.

And in doing so, we’ve built an insane system—one that abolishes the very profession it claims to protect.

Excellent article. I live in Fort Lauderdale and the schools still masked even after they were told to stop enforcing it by Desantis. Even my daughter's private school masked but not after Desantis though. I told her she didn't have to go but she needed friends so she went and wore one. I spoke out about them to the christian school but they followed the unscientific CDC. I emailed too about the nonefficacy papers and about the vax ingredients like aborted baby DNA but they wouldn't even consider them. I was well respected but then was viewed as a pariah. That was my church too and I stopped going sadly.

I guess it was too hard to believe that our gov would blatantly lie about it all plus the pressure and fear was overwhelming.

Other than that, we didn't wear them where we went but we did put them on our necks in case we met a mask nazi and nobody said squat to us. I would speak out about them to strangers and embarrass her. She just wanted to do the right thing. She is 21 now and found her voice. I bet if it happened again she would go psycho on anyone trying to tell her to do something she knew in her gut was wrong after what she went through. Hard lesson I hope we all learned.

This is fascinating. I too, thought masking demonstrated I was a “good person” until they forced my young child to wear one in order to return to school. I will never forgive them for what they did to our children. I am really looking forward to reading your book!

I don't think the harm of masking is just symbolic. We are designed to read human faces. I suspect not seeing faces/being able to read nonverbal facial signals contributed to the mental health degradation as well as contributing to the "othering" of those on partisan divides. We need to see faces.

That will be addressed later. I cannot do everything all at once because there is too much. The scientifically demonstrated and potential harms will probably come at the end of the last post, to finish the series.

I want to also note, masks harmed the hearing impaired. I read lips as a major part of my communication. Without it I was hopelessly stuck in restaurants, at the grocery store, etc.

And I was told I was evil for thinking this was causing a real accessibility issue.

Thank you for this article! You touched on the exact reason I was an OG anti-masker: I recognized masks as a new sort of religious symbol. They reminded me of a burkha, with everyone who donned them doing so as a symbol of submission to the regime.

I was fortunately never arrested, but I was certainly harassed, even in my semi-rural southern US town. I received bizarre demands to move out of the way from strangers as I simply minded my own business, and I was denied healthcare at my OBGYN. I'm very thankful that I never had any health emergencies during that time.

The silver lining is that the constant threat of public harassment and violence over two-ish years has made me a lot more resilient against conflict. The thought of strangers' irrational hatred and the loss of all the conveniences of society that I had taken for granted would have likely paralyzed me before 2020, but now I have a resolve to walk through it. That seems to be the case for others like me as well.

I honestly didn’t think there was anything more to say about masking but this article proved me wrong. I was however correct about wearing a mask. lol. Sorry I couldn’t help that last part. I’m looking forward to the next part of your series.

The masks also enfeebled a generation of children. Children from birth through middle school have fallen behind in speech and the ability to form connections with people face to face. Those key developmental milestones of learning expressions for emotions, forming words/enunciation, and close physical connection were all eliminated with masks and social distancing. Is it any wonder this generation is behind in reading, cannot form bonds with people in real life, and suffers debilitating anxiety? How easy it is to control those who have been robbed of basic human connections? Control anxiety with medication. Control feelings of insecurity and uncertainty with body altering surgeries. Dumb down the curriculum to a monoculture with “standards” and create a generation of people who cannot think for themselves. Exaggerate the extremes of religion and politics, create algorithms that build silos. The few in power (who largely ignored their own mandates) can arise as saviors of the broken world.

Feeling cynical today.

I did a little math when mask mandates came out, comparing the size of a virus particle to the size of the smallest particle a mask could filter out. Turns out it’s like stopping sand with a chain link fence

The problems are much deeper than that. The masking paradigm isn’t even right. It’s about accumulating exposures in a room, ventilation, degree of blockade, aerosol vs droplets, dose threshold effects and so on. They have known about all of this for a long time, and they know broadly why the trials haven’t worked out. The model they presented to the public has little basis in what we understand about the physics of masks. Most doctors don’t even have any idea. I am presenting basically a sociological model to explain why none of this was communicated and why none of what we were told was real or mattered. It didn’t need to be because communicating reality and science and saving lives was not the goal of masking policies. The fine details of masking physics will be part 4 or 5 before I wrap up.

Hi Kevin

Great article. Go review the University of Arizona news archives regarding the 1918 Flu Pandemic. Everything put forth by public health for the COVID pandemic was tried during the Flu pandemic.. and it all failed then just as it did now. All of it. Masks, lockdowns, social distancing, school closures, etc.

Fecolith Fauci, Scarf girl et al were ALL of the 1918 finding.. imcluding deaths were from bacterial pneumonia and not flu. Yet, they all lied to the contrary. Not so called noble lies, fraudulent and criminal lies.

They all need criminally charged and sued civilly.

Great article! Thanks! Retired General Surgeon. Broke my heart to see medicine completely broken by politics during covid. Granted could see the leftist mindset infecting medicine before I retired. Trump derangement tore the mask off of so many to show their true colors. Good pun. Don't see the trust coming back anytime soon

The initial CDC BSL for SARS-Cov2 were:

1. Routine lab testing = BSL2 with specimens handled in BSL2 cabinet with negative flow and viral quality HEPPA filtration.

2. Research with virus = BSL3. *Side bar: Baric's UNC lab used BSL2 while conducting GOF "no-see-um" SARS research. Nice huh?

Current CDC BSL are:

1. No change

2. BSL2+: Side bar: this is a made up BSL

Bottom line: both BSL2, BSL2+ and BSL3 utilize neg flow hoods. None allow for "just a mask".

The whole mask issue is a combination of co-opted pseudoscience, virture signaling, public health propaganda, and and entrenched ideology that "your effective mask keeps me safe".

Masks are NOT designed to prevent acquisition or transmission of aerosolized respiratory pathogens... just large droplet source control.

Any health professional walking around indoors and outdoors with a surgical mask on is simply viture signaling and is an unserious person. An ideologue.

People need to get the co-morbidities under control in lieu of the assinine mask ideology.

Kevin- Great article. I agree with it, though I do think there are many 'true believers' who to this day obsess over the notion that masks really help prevent the spread.

One thing I wonder is the extent to which those in the academy- who largely profess no religion- nonetheless need some semblance of religion and so have constructed much of the academy as a pseudo-religion without even realizing it. I attended a religious institution for undergraduate, and am pretty sure I saw equal-to-more DEI buzzwords at my (state-run) PhD university than I saw religious wording at my undergraduate university.

My thesis is that it's not really a pseudo-religion. It's an actual religion, but we don't recognize it as such, because we live in a post-Christian society and don't understand pagan religion because of our experience with Christianity. Yes, it filled a "need" but it goes beyond that. Humans are fundamentally and inextricably religious in the basic way we experience the world. In my view, progressivism is basically a quasi-Christian religious variant of mainline Protestantism, one might say a universalizing secular (post-)Christian denomination that does not recognize itself as such.
