Just hit a monetization benchmark after a month on Substack: thoughts

Yesterday on Twitter I bragged about making $1,000 from substack so I can save up for a Bugatti.

But the truth is that my post-apocalyptic-looking Dodge Caravan recently broke down, I cannot afford another car right now, I have 3 kids, and I'm struggling to get down my credit card debt without pulling out another loan.

Every paid subscriber makes a huge difference. Literally, I'm like the adult version of a kid for whom just a quarter is a big deal. Except for me, it's $10 that is a big deal.

I'm genuinely not naturally good at monetizing, because I'm mainly passionate about ideas.

So when I do make some money (and our MD/PhD stipend is <$25,000/year) from just blogging, it makes my day. And at the time I just wanted to brag about that without seeming too poor.

So I just want to thank everyone that contributes. Because it means a huge amount.
